Author Guidelines

General Policy
Authors are required to strictly follow the formatting and submission guidelines of JPIU. Manuscripts that do not comply with the journal's requirements will be returned without review. Authors are encouraged to carefully read all instructions prior to submission.

The Journal of Philippine Island Universities (JPIU) is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to advancing innovative, evidence-based research that addresses critical issues relevant to island and rural communities in the Philippines and the global community. The journal serves as a platform for disseminating scientific knowledge, community-based innovations, and policy-relevant findings that support sustainable development.

JPIU accepts high-quality manuscripts with strong empirical or theoretical foundations across a diverse range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

  • Agriculture and Forestry
  • Climate Change
  • Disaster Management
  • Education Access
  • Environment and Resilience
  • Information Technology
  • Public Health
  • Rural Entrepreneurship
  • Socio-Cultural Studies

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • Manuscripts under consideration by another journal or publisher should not be submitted.
  • Submissions must be uploaded through the official JPIU online portal https://jpiu.bipsu.edu.ph/index.php/home/user/register or sent via email to jpiu@bipsu.edu.ph, accompanied by a formal cover letter.
  • A separate title page must include the manuscript title, full names of all authors, institutional affiliations, email addresses, contact numbers, and ORCID iDs. Changes in authorship after acceptance are not permitted.
  • A declaration of author contribution order and roles is required for multi-author submissions.

Manuscript Formatting Guidelines

Authors submitting to the Journal of Philippine Island Universities (JPIU) must adhere to the following formatting standards:    

  1. File Format
    • Submit manuscripts in editable Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx). PDF files will not be accepted.
    • You may download the JPIU Article Format template here.
  1. Layout
    • Use a single-column layout with continuous line numbering throughout the manuscript to facilitate review.
  1. Manuscript Structure

           Manuscripts should be organized in the following order:

    1. Title
    2. Authors (include corresponding author with ORCID iD when applicable)
    3. Abstract (max. 250 words)
    4. Keywords (3–6)
    5. Introduction
    6. Materials and Methods/Methodology
    7. Results and Discussion
    8. Conclusion
    9. References
    10. Declarations (see section below)
    11. Author Contributions
    12. Acknowledgments
  1. Declarations Section

             The “Declarations” section must include, where applicable:

    • Author Contributions 
    • Funding Statement
    • Data Availability Statement
    • AI Use Disclosure
    • Acknowledgments

            CRediT authorship contribution statement

    • Author 1: Writing – original draft, Resources, Financial Administration, Methodology, Formal analysis, Data curation, Conceptualization
    • Author 2: Data Collection, Writing – review & editing. 
  1. Word Count
    • Manuscripts must be between 4,000 to 6,000 words, inclusive of all main text sections (excluding tables, figures, and references).
  1. Tables and Figures
    • Tables must be provided as editable text, not as images.
    • Include concise titles, appropriate footnotes, and units of measurement.
    • Figures should be of high resolution (300 dpi minimum) and submitted in separate image files (.jpg, .png, or .tif).
    • Figure captions must be placed below the figure, while table captions are placed above.
  1. Units and Equations
    • Use SI units consistently throughout the manuscript.
    • Equations must be editable (e.g., using MS Word Equation Editor) and numbered consecutively (e.g., Eq. 1, Eq. 2).
  1. References
    • Follow the latest APA style (7th edition).
    • Include DOIs or URLs where available.
    • Reference formatting examples:
